Location-based AR Experience  •  2021 NMY UnSeen

UnSeen is a white label software framework for location-based AR experiences. It supports the creation of tours with various points of interest featuring linear or interactive content.

The framework was used to create the Circus Obscura demo tour in Frankfurt as well as the Tour de Grass app for the Günter Grass-Haus in Lübeck. I worked on this project as the lead designer.

About the project

As demand for decentralized outdoor events and activities grew in the last years and more and more smartphones are capable of running sophisticated Augmented Reality experiences, NMY set out to design a white label software solution for virtual tours and Mixed Reality experiences. NMY UnSeen is aimed at various clients and applications, from virtual outdoor museums or trade fares to educational tours or city marketing initiatives. Each UnSeen tour consists of any number of points of interest, each featuring linear or interactive content such as Augmented Reality experiences, videos or audio recordings. After a brief onboarding process, players choose and download one of the tours presented in an app built with UnSeen. They can then use the app to navigate to the entry of the tour and start the experience at the first point of interest. The tours can be set up to be explored one stop after the other or in a non-linear fashion. By exploring each of the tours stops and experiences, players progress along its route and complete it step by step. Besides the main stops, initially hidden points of interest can be discovered using a virtual scanner and collectibles and trophies can be earned along the way. To demonstrate the frameworks features, NMY created the Circus Obscura tour in Frankfurt, in which players can explore a virtual circus and its slightly run-down attractions accompanied by the quirky circus director Monty the rabbit.

After a brief onboarding process, players start a tour and explore its points of interest. They can navigate to the next stop using a 2D or 3D map view. Each stop contains an Augmented Reality experience, audio recording or video telling the players a part of the tours story.

The tours stops can be discovered on the map or accessed via a list. When the players have reached the location of a point of interest, they can start its experience.

The highlight of each tour are the interactive Augmented Reality experiences that can reach from static scenes to animated, interactive sequences and games. They can contain fun challenges for the players and tell the tours story.

As a reward for completing experiences, players earn collectibles and trophies. These can contain story bits or clues on hidden content. Players can complete a tour by exploring all of its main stops.

Based on UnSeen, NMY together with the Günter-Grass Haus in Lübeck, created the Tour de Grass app. It features a virtual tour with 24 stops along the Elbe-Lübeck-Kanal in the Stecknitz region, that allows users to experience German artist and writer Günter Grass' work along the landscape it was created in.

You can download the Tour de Grass app on the iOS and Android app stores.
